Chaplain of Preston Gaol, Lancashire 1823-1858 (see DNB and Alumni Cantabrigensis.) John's father was Thomas Ship and Anchor Merchant of Liverpool. This would help explain why Alfred went there. Walter Lowe Clay was admitted pensioner on 14 April 1851 to his father's old college, Emmanuel. The Mr and Mrs Clay mentioned throughout the accounts would appear to be John's parents Thomas and his wife. Why the document is in the Orlebar Archive is unclear.
