- Scope and ContentExamination of Joseph Carter: I am about 40 years of age and am now actually chargeable to the parish of St Paul in this Borough. In November 1817 being then an unmarried person and not having a child or children I was hired by Mr Thomas Daniel of the parish of Wilshamstead, farmer, as horsekeeper to serve him until Old Michaelmas Day in the following year at the wages of four pounds and my board and lodging. I entered his service as agreed and continued and abided in the same service until the Old Michaelmas Day in Wilshamstead when my Master again hired me for a whole year at the wages of five pounds ten shillings and my board and lodging. My Master gave me a shilling earnest money when he hired me and I contined and abided under the last mentioned hiring for the whole period of a year at Wilshamstead. At the termination of this service Mr Daniel hired me again for another year at five pounds ten shillings wages and my board and lodging and I residied in this hiring also for the whole year. I then went to day work until Christmas in the same year when I let myself to Mr James Spring of Wilshamstead, farmer as horsekeeper to serve him until the following Michaelmas Day at the wages of four pounds ten shillings and board and lodging. I served Mr Spring as agreed upon until Old Michaelmas Day when Mr Spring hired me for a year at the wages of five pounds five shillings and I continued in this hiring until the termination of the year. I was married in the parish church of Haynes on 29th September1825 to Elizabeth Green, spinster, my present wife, by whom I have six children Elizabeth aged 14 years, Joseph aged 13 years, Sophia aged 11 years, Mary Ann aged 7 years, Robert aged 5 years and John aged 3 years. Within a few months after our marriage I and my wife were residing in Haynes and became chargeable to the parish and an order was made by Justices of the Peace for the County for our removal to Wilshamstead. We were removed under the order by Mr John Gudgin, one of the Overseers of Haynes and were by him delivered to Mr John Armstrong, then one of the overseers of Wilshamstead who received and provided for us in the workhouse of that parish. In the month of december 1835 I was residingwith my wife and family in Gravel Lane, St paul, bedford and being ill applied for relief to mr Chapman the Master of the Workhouse of Bedford Union. Mr Chapman relieved me for two weeks with bread. Order suspended as Joseph Carter unable to travel due to sikness and infirmity. Second copy of removal order. Examination of Samuel Wing, Clerk to the Board of Guardians of the Bedford Union: On 21st July instant I delivered a notice to Mr George Morgan one of the Churchwardens of the parish of Wilshamstead that the Churchwardens and Overseers of that parish should deliver at the Petty Sessions at Shire Hall, bedford a certain order of 1825 whereby the said Joseph Carter was ordered to be removed from Haynes to Wilshamstead. He the said Joseph Carter is the person mentioned in the entries in the Outdoor Relief and the Union Ledger as having been relieved in the second and fourth weeks of that quarter. Statement of William Millwood, Relieving officer of the Poor within the Borough of Bedford: I know the pauper Joseph Carter, he resides now in Ford End Road, St Paul in the said Borough. He broke his leg about 5 weeks ago and in my opinion due to his present infirmity he is unable to be brought to Petty Sessions to be examined as to his settlement.
