    Reads- Duke surprised at Ridgmont difficulty, will go over land with me when he returns; meanwhile to continue draining etc. Gudgin's farm bad; also heavy parochial burdens. Have suggested to Duke letting grassland and keeping arable in hand; then I could get Gudgin's in a good state, and we shall see how poor law is going. His practice in Ridgmont with unemployed. Gudgin; I told him he must go at Michaelmas. Weather. Lord Althorp. I suppose Crocker has told you the labourers' wages have been reduced ls. per week; ruinous price of wheat makes it necessary for farmers; men have behaved well. I fear it will be a serious year with the farmers if markets do not rise a little.
