    [note that with exception of Ampthill, the catalogue omits rental etc. values included in the volume, seeking mainly to catalogue the land and its owners/occupiers; note also that the word conveyance is used throughout the document with the sense of a lease rather than a conveyance in strict modern legal terms] (I) containing, at the start, a copy of R/6/1/1/11, then adding: (aa) 14 stalls in Market Place of Ampthill, also the butchers' shambles with tolls and profits of fairs and markets with houses and buildings, ways, tollgraine, customs, tallages, penns, stalls and shoepence; noting that there were two fairs per year on 30 Nov and 23 Apr and a weekly market on Thursdays [William Fowks claimed to hold the premises by letters patent from James I of 6 Jul 1616 made to Richard Hodgkis during lives of Thomas, Lord Bruce, Baron of Kinloss, now Earl of Elgin, Sir William Cavendish, late Earl of Devon and Christian his wife; and by indenture of 19 Jun 1641 between Henrietta Maria etc. and William Fowks for 15/- paid to Sir Richard Wynn, Receiver General, and surrender of the stalls, and for a yearly rent of 6/13/4; William Fowks, as lessee, to keep the premises in repair. The premises were previously let by Richard Hodgkis to Ambrose Sam, now Bailiff of the Honour at 20 per annum, Sam now being tenant of Fowks - the premises being worth above the rent 13/6/8 (ab) Ampthill Warren of 250 acres bounded N by Ampthill Great Park, W by Ampthill Little Park, abutting on highway from Ampthill to Maulden to E and Ampthill town fields to S; [marginal note that part of the warren held by Mrs.Walker was claimed by the writer, who, if his part did not make up 250 acres intended to claim it]; stock of conies worth 5/10/-; tenants and freeholders of the Honour claimed common for beasts, sheep and horses on the warren - worth 30 over rent (ac) Park Mead of 53a 2r 0p abutting town of Ampthill to S [Edmund Wingate claimed (ab)-(ac) by indenture of 24 Mar 1640 from Henrietta Maria etc. to Robert Hewett of Ampthill for 60 years during lives of Francis Hewett and Edward Butler, paying 6 for (ab) and 8 for (ac) per annum, paying 6/6/8 in addition on deaths of Francis Hewett and Edward Butler], worth 62 over rent (ad) note of Court Baron of Honour held at Ampthill Moot Hall and Court Leet "kept at usual times" and extended into following places: Ampthill, Millbrook, Flitwick, Steppingley, Maulden [in part], Houghton Conquest [in part], Marston Moretaine [in part], Harlington, Eversholt, Milton Bryan, Chalgrave, Wilstead and Wavendon [Buckinghamshire]; (b) William Brace, copyholder, held a messuage with pightle and 2 acres of arable and paid upon the death of each tenant a best beast for heriot; (c) Thomas Squire, copyholder, held a messuage and 4 acres of land, paying upon the death of each tenant a best beast for heriot; (d) William Lycett leased a cottage and garden plot of one rood; (e) Richard Stephens leased a cottage and garden plot of one rood; (f) Naddon Morrison leased a cottage and garden plot of one rood; (g) John Sam leased a cottage and garden plot of one rood; (h) John Meade leased a cottage and garden plot of one rood; (i) Richard Evans leased a cottage and garden plot of one rood; (j) John Huckle leased a cottage and two garden plots of one rood [(d)-(j) abutted on Millbrook Warren to N and were built on the manor common, the present tenants having their estates from letters patent of James I of 24 Apr 1616 to Richard Hodgkis for 21 years then by letters patent of Henrietta Maria etc. of 20 Feb 1632 to Edmund Lycett for 21 years after the first term ceased]; (b) messuage with small adjoining garden in Bedford, St.Cuthbert abutting on church to E and castle to S, in possession of Simon Beckett and William Graunt; (c) Star hostelry with outhouses in Angel Street, Bedford, St.Paul with yards, abutting on common street to W and in occupation of William Trewlove; (n) manor had Court Baron Surveyed by Thomas Fowle, Walter Blythe and John Ward; and examined by William Webb; [examined on 18 Jun 1707?] by James Whitehead and Robert Sharp (VIII) Additional Survey of Manor of Newnham of 24 Mar 1653 containing, amongst other things: (a) tenement in Angel Street, Bedford, St.Paul, previously known as the Star, now as Red Lettice containing 3 rooms on ground floor and two upstairs, a little yard and barn and a stable of two bays, abutting N on house in occupation of Mr.Hawes, or an assign, called the Star, S on house in occupation of Mr.Hawes, or assign, called the Angel; Mr.Beckett, brewer, was undertenant to Mr.Hawes Surveyed by Francis Congrave, John Thorne and Gabriel Taylor, examined by William Webb; examined on 18 Jun 1707 by James Whitehead and Robert Sharp (IX) Order of Commissioners for removing obstructions in Bargain and sale of Honours of the late King, Queen and Prince of May 1654 that surveyors carrying out the survey of Manor of Newnham included a tenement of Thomas Hawes called the Star [(c) in (VII) above], but missed another premises which was rectified by (VIII) above and that the purchaser needed a reprise of the same and should pay for the additional premises (X) Survey of Three Hundreds of Newport [Buckinghamshire], called Bunsloe, Seglowe and Mulsowe, part of Honour of Ampthill, carried out in Jul 1651 including, amongst other things: (a) certainty money from inhabitants of Bletchley; (b) coppice of 5 acres of woodland in Steppingley abutting on Wheat Close to N and Pease Close to E, on highway to Ampthill on W and in occupation of John Styles, which he held by conveyance from John Eldred and William Whitmore of London, gentlemen; (d) manor had Court Baron and had no heriots Surveyed by Walter Blithe, S.Fine, Thomas Fowle and John Ward; examined on 18 Jun 1707 by James Whitehead and Robert Sharp (XII) Survey of Manor of Campton [Camelton] & Shefford, part of Honour of Ampthill, made in Nov 1649 and containing, amongst other things: (a) cottage in Campton previously belonging to William Fowks, gentleman, being out of repair, with little backside, in occupation of Thomas Ravens, on S of main street with hempland of Widow Shakespeare to N, Lady Grayes Yard to W and tenement of Phineas Laws to E; (b) tolls of weekly market, held every Friday, and annual fair held on Michaelmas Day, granted by Henrietta Maria to James Sampson of Henlow on 19 Jun 1635 for 21 years; (c) White Hart hostelry in Shefford, at W end of Butchers Shambles, with 4 [low] rooms and 4 [bed]chambers, well tiled, with barn and stable of 4 bays, with 3 roods in Fords Meadow on backside of hostelry to E and 4a 1r 0p of arable in common fields of Shefford to S; tenant was William Farr by conveyance from John Eldred and William Whitmore who had it from James I by letters patent of 31 Aug 1610 for 60 years; (d) terrace of 4 cottages in Shefford, known as Rotten Row, with half a rood of meadow on backside in occupations of Henry Thorn, Henry Jennings, Thomas Holmes and Nathaniel Butcher; claimed by William Wheeler of Silsoe, gentleman, by letters patent of James I of 31 Aug 1610 to John Eldred and William Whitmore for 60 years; (e) Feathers hostelry in Shefford on N side of town street, with 4 rooms downstairs and 3 rooms upstairs with stable and garden plot or yard on backside of 3 roods on which 3 cottages were erected; with one pole or rood of land in Midsummer Meadow on N side of highway from Shefford to Ampthill; in occupation of William Collins; (f) Adam & Eve hostelry (formerly the Wrasters [Wrestlers?]) in Shefford town street abutting on chapel to E and Butchers Shambles to S; with 3 rooms downstairs and 4 rooms upstairs, a kitchen, barn and stable on backside, with an acre of meadow on backside and 7 acres of meadow between Hardwick River and common on N side of town; in occupation of Thomas Jordan; (v) manor had Court Baron and Court Leet Surveyed by William Blyth, Thomas Fowle, John Ward and S.Fine; examined by William Webb (XIII) Survey of messuage in Shefford, part of Honour of Ampthill and Manor of Campton & Shefford in Nov 1649 (a) messuage on S side of Shefford town street leading from Campton chapel consisting of a workshop, hall and two other rooms downstairs and 3 chambers upstairs being 20ft E-W and 12ft N-S; adjoining tenement of John Doggett to E and of [blank] Franklyn to W; with small back yard adjoining; in occupation of Nathaniel Duke; William Wheeler of Silsoe pretended title to it by letters patent of James I of 21 Aug 1610 to John Eldred and William Whitmore, which the Commissioners, after studying the documents and interviewing Wheeler, found to be a false claim and he disclaimed the messuage before the Commissioners at Ampthill on 24 Nov 1649 under the letters patent of 1610 but claimed title to it by other letters patent which he could not find, stating it was part of Rotten Row [see (d) in (XII) above], which the Commissioners dismissed as Rotten Row lay on E side of Shefford whereas (a) above lay on S side at W end Surveyed by S.Fine, William Blythe, John Ward and Thomas Fowle; (d) Shefford market tolls to Mr.Rumb for 26 years from 25 Mar 1681; (e) cottage and backside in Shefford in occupation of Henry Oldsborow, formerly Margaret Cranfield together with Rotten Row demised to Thomas Cawood, gentleman for 31 years from 25 Mar 1676; (f) tenement in Church Street, Ampthill called Old House Yard demised to Mr.Wolin and John Hancock from 25 Mar 1692 for 16 years; (g) messuage in Church Street, Ampthill in occupation of Jeffrey Palmer, demised to Wolin and Hancock for 16 years from 24 Jan 1691;
