- Scope and ContentNote: (P) indicates a Primitive Methodist church; (W) indicates a Wesleyan Methodist church; these two forms of Methodism joined in 1932 to help create the current Methodist Church of Great Britain
- System of arrangementUnfortunately there is no system of arrangement to this collection. New deposits are just given the next running number. Therefore information about particular circuits, chapels and registers is generally scattered throughout the collection. One reason behind this is the difficulty of coming up with a scheme that could reflect the changes to the circuits and different forms of Methodism over time.
- NOTE: Methodist records deposited before 1 Sep 1994 are subject to a 50 year closure, records deposited after this time are subject to a restriction of 30 years on access, a restriction of seventy five years on access shall apply to records of a confidential nature, including correspondence, papers and machine-readable records containing personal details of a sensitive nature relating to individuals in respect of complaints, disciplinary procedures, interviews, invitations, stationing, pastoral matters, case-studies and assessment files, as passed by the 1994 Methodist Conference. The Superintendent Minister of the Circuit may give permission to see closed records in certain circumstances. Certain classes of material deemed to have already made public (such as pulpit notices, handbills and brochures etc, and registers of baptisms, are excluded from this rule and are freely available for inspection.
- A.If looking for registers Bear in mind that baptisms were generally registered by Circuit until the late C19th, and few individual chapels had registers. Pre-1837 registers at Public Record Office are available on microfilm, and some have been 'transcribed and indexed. Ask about availability of Computer indexes. B.If looking for material on a particular chapel We suggest you search by place and by subject - methodist chapels. This is not exact but is probably the best way to get most coverage. It may also be useful to find out which circuts the chapel was attached to at various times in order to find circuit documents, especially Quarterly Minutes, Accounts, Schedule books, and Circuit plans, that may give details of the chapel in question. The searchroom card subject index gives details of the Circuits to which Chapels belong and provide catalogue reference numbers for documents relating specifically to the Chapel in question, see under CHURCH / Nonconformity Methodism / [place].
