    The Bedford Rural District Council came into being upon the passing of the Local Government Act 1894. The first meeting of the council being held on the 5th January 1895. The area covered 39 parishes in the Bedford Poor Law Union and 2 parishes (Podington and Wymington) in the Wellingborough Poor Law Union; all actually situated in Bedfordshire. In 1934 several parishes or parts of parished were transferred to the Borough of Bedford (with a small detached portion of Elstow going to Kempston Urban) and the Rural District of Eaton Socon then comprising 7 parishes was incorporated in the Bedford Rural District. By 1973 it consisted of 43 parishes with a population of 39,540 and an area of 110,247 acres and had 50 elected members. Under the changes to local government in 1974 the council ceased to exist on the 1st April 1974 and joined with Bedford Borough, Kempston Urban to beome the new Bedford District council.

    This authority originally comprised the following parishes: Great Barford; Biddenham; Bletsoe; Bolnhurst; Bromham; Cardington; Carlton; Chellington; Clapham; Colmworth; Cople; Eastcotts; Elstow; Felmersham; Goldington; Harrold; Kempston Rural; Keysoe; Knotting; Melchbourne; Milton Ernest; Oakley; Odell; Pavenham; Podington; Ravensden; Renhold; Riseley; Sharnbrook; Stagsden; Stevington; Souldrop; Thurleigh; Turvey; Wilden; Willington; Wilshamstead; Wootton; Wymington; Yielden Eaton Socon Rural District Council was abolished in 1934 at which point the following parishes were added to Bedford RDC: Little Barford; Dean; Eaton Socon; Pertenhall; Shelton; Little Staughton; Swineshead. In the same year Goldington was absorbed into the Borough of Bedford - see BorB Stewartby was added on its creation in 1937 Bedford RDC was abolished in 1974 on creation of North Bedfordshire Borough Council [DCN] - itself later renamed Bedford Borough Council For records of Bedford itself see Borough of Bedford [BorB]
